WeatherView N-Model Helps Optimize Fertilizer Investments

May 28, 2020

How often has this happened: Plans are set. Data is analyzed. Field needs are determined. Equipment is ready. Your corn is ready to be fed.

And then it rains, and rains, and rains much more than it ever has before around this time -- potentially washing your planning away with much need Nitrogen.

Now comes a series of yield affecting questions and decisions.

Should you reapply? Chances are you don’t need the full amount, so where is the line before your operation is hit with diminished returns when it comes to your nitrogen investment?

WeatherView has a tool to analyze the field data and answer these questions.

The WeatherView Nitrogen Model in DataOnTouch Manages Nitrogen Costs

Nestled inside the Weatherview DOT is the Nitrogen Model, a tool that predicts a field’s nitrogen fertilizer needs to meet a specific yield goal.

By pulling soil data from one of the field’s five nearest Weather stations, the N-Model calculates nitrogen conversion based on soil temperature, water infiltration, and percolation.

Then by combining this current field data with historical weather data from that same Weather station, the N-model predicts the amount of nitrogen needed to hit the desired yield goal. By easily inputting seed hybrid, different nitrogen products, and estimated application dates, you can run scenarios to determine the optimal amount of product to use in an application. Both organic and inorganic sources of N are taken into account as well as loss due to leaching, volatilization, and denitrification.

Up to four applications can be placed in a single 'season'.
Supported Products:

  • Anhydrous Ammonia
  • UAN28
  • UAN32
  • UERA 45
  • Ammonia
  • Row Starter
  • Nitrate
  • Super U

The results are shown in three different forms.

How Can I Use the N-Model on My Fields?

Co-Alliance customers can access WeatherView and the N-Model with a free subscription to DataOnTouch  until Oct. 31st. Once you get your account set up all your field information is added automatically with data from Co-Alliance’s Soil Sampling program and the Maps DOT so you can begin experimenting with your future applications or your Co-Alliance Agronomy team member is able to offer their expertise and run different nitrogen scenarios if you’d prefer.
